Annual Report and Accounts

2003 proved a highly successful trading year for the Port, filling the void left by the closure, in 2002, of two of its largest bulk customers, Irish Fertiliser Industries and Belfast West Power Station. Bulk trade in 2003 was up by 2% to 7.16 million tonnes. Principal increases were in imports of fertilisers [up 123%] and animal feeds [up 6%], while scrap metal exports grew by 14%.

The Port also achieved record tonnages in the break bulk sector in 2003, handling half a million tonnes of break bulk products for the first time, reaffirming its position as Ireland’s leading port in this sector.

Total container traffic rose by 11% in 2003 with a record 128,000 units being handled at the Port’s container terminal. Traffic on the direct services linking Belfast with mainland Europe increased by 20%. Ro/ro traffic also increased during the year with 321,000 freight vehicles using the Port’s cross channel services.
