BELFAST CELEBRATES 30 YEARS OF CRUISE EXCELLENCE SECURING SPOT AS SECOND BUSIEST CRUISE PORT IN THE UK
Cruise Belfast to officially launch 2026 summer season on 1st April
Belfast is set to celebrate 30 years of welcoming cruise ships to the city, a major milestone for the region’s tourism industry, with the launch of the 2026 season.
Since the first cruise ship docked at Belfast Harbour in 1996, Belfast has transformed into a premier global cruise destination securing its place as the second busiest cruise port in the UK, after Southampton, and the busiest on the island of Ireland.
Cruise Belfast, the strategic partnership between Belfast Harbour and Visit Belfast which markets the city as a leading cruise tourism destination, has announced that the summer cruise season will officially commence on Wednesday 1st April, with the arrival of the Fred Olsen Cruise Line’s ‘Bolette’. The city will host 141 cruise calls throughout the year, with 10 ships making their inaugural call to the city.
A key highlight for 2026 is the continued growth of the “turnaround” market. This season, 13 turnaround cruises are expected (an increase from seven in 2025), where guests will both embark and disembark ships in Belfast, resulting in a boost to overnight stays and tourist spend in the city. In addition, seven cruise ships will be staying overnight in port, allowing passengers to spend even more time in the city and region.
The cruise industry has become a vital pillar of the Northern Ireland economy, with cruises through Belfast Harbour contributing an estimated £26 million annually. Over the last three decades, the industry has brought millions of international visitors to these shores, showcasing the region’s world-class hospitality and unique attractions.
Meanwhile construction continues on Belfast Harbour’s new £90m deepwater cruise quay at the mouth of the port. Due to enter operation in 2028, the new quay and terminal will accommodate some of the world’s largest cruise vessels, supporting ongoing growth in the sector, while enhancing the visitor experience for guests.
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins MLA said:
“The cruise industry is a crucial driver of our regional infrastructure and economic prosperity. Seeing Belfast Harbour’s growth into the busiest cruise ship port on the island is a fantastic achievement. This 30-year milestone reflects the hard work of everyone involved in making the region a welcoming and accessible destination for international tourism. My department remains committed to supporting the infrastructure that allows our ports to thrive and drive regional growth.”
Dr Theresa Donaldson, Chair of Belfast Harbour Commissioners, said:
“Celebrating 30 years of cruise tourism is a proud moment for Belfast Harbour – and one I don’t think too many people could have foreseen back in the early days. What began as two ship visits in 1996 has evolved into a thriving industry that supports thousands of jobs and brings global vibrancy to our waterfront. Our ongoing investment in the port including new deepwater quay facilities underscores our commitment to ensuring Belfast remains a top-tier destination for cruise tourism for the next 25 years and beyond.”
Gerry Lennon, CEO Visit Belfast, added:
“The 30th anniversary marks the positive impact cruise tourism has brought to our city. By welcoming visitors from all corners of the globe, we proudly showcase the very best of what Belfast City & Region has to offer. Our strategic partnership with Belfast Harbour has never been stronger and we are ready for a new season welcoming 141 cruise calls during this landmark year.”
The success of the cruise industry in Belfast is a testament to the dedicated work of the Cruise Belfast team. The collaboration ensures a seamless, safe and world-class welcome for every passenger and crew member who steps onto the quayside.
