Beyond the quayside, regeneration of our inner harbour will open up waterfront living and new workspaces, with sustainability at the centre of everything we set out to achieve through this Masterplan.
Sustainability
We are committed to growth that supports a low-carbon economy, as we balance our environmental goals with the practicalities of a working port.
Since 2015, we have reduced operational emissions by more than 70% – from approximately 4,100 tCO2e to 1,188 tCO2e in 2024 – while doubling business turnover over the same period. By 2027, we expect to have reduced emissions by over 93% against our 2015 baseline.
Beyond our own operations, this Masterplan embeds sustainability into every horizon – through shore power, clean energy infrastructure, nature recovery and climate-resilient design.
People & Place
A programme of regeneration of our inner harbour will strengthen the connection between port and city, creating new and vibrant places to live, work and visit, including the City Quays 4 & 5 developments, as well as a comprehensive reimagining of the historic Clarendon Wharf area.
Plans for a new Maritime Skills Academy at Ballast Quay will also provide clear routes into maritime, logistics and offshore energy roles for people across Belfast and beyond.
Community & Nature
We will protect and enhance biodiversity across the estate, with around 125 acres designated for terrestrial nature recovery – including the RSPB Harbour Reserve, the Nature Conservation Area, the Tillysburn River Corridor and coastal habitats along Airport Road West.
So too will we continue our work with environmental organisations and academic institutions on habitat enhancement, native oyster reef restoration and coastal monitoring.
