BELFAST HARBOUR’S SUSTAINABILITY COMMITMENTS RECOGNISED FOR 16TH TIME IN A ROW THROUGH BENCHMARK ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION REPORT

Belfast Harbour has achieved Platinum status in the 2024 Northern Ireland Environmental Benchmarking Survey.

Results of the survey, which is carried out annually by Business in the Community NI, reveal the measures which have been taken by Belfast Harbour and more than 130 other organisations from a range of sectors to improve the environment and their emissions. The findings are used to benchmark, measure progress, and drive improvements year-on-year.

Less than one-third of the organisations surveyed achieved Platinum Level – the highest status – in the survey. This is the 16th time in a row that Belfast Harbour has achieved this prestigious accolade.

Belfast Harbour Sustainability Officer Simon Gibson said: “We are delighted to have achieved Platinum status in the survey, as this reflects the extent to which Belfast Harbour is prioritising greater sustainability in its work. Taking part in this survey offers us an important opportunity to gather valuable insights and feedback into how our performance ranks against our peers and counterparts within the business community in Northern Ireland.

“Earlier this year we published our first-ever ESG report, in which we were proud to be able to reveal that we have cut our greenhouse gas emissions by 18% in 2023, and are expected to reach net zero in our direct operations well ahead of our 2030 target.

“We continue to build this approach into our work going forward, particularly as we anticipate the publication of our new five-year strategy in the new year, to be followed by our 2050 Masterplan; accelerating to net zero and supporting others to do the same will be the cornerstone of our transformative ambitions for the port and estate. Thank you to BITCNI for providing us with the opportunity to participate.”
